A slightly belated Happy New Year shout-out due to all BBD readers and fans out there. I’m kicking off 2013 with minimal hesitation, in the form of a podcast mix. Back in the fall, local DJ Jon Gilman read my blog post that DJTechTools picked up and immediately got in touch with me. It turned out to be a small world, after all, considering the blog he co-founded, MyMusicIsBetterThanYours.com, had been in my reader for months.
Jon turned out to be one of several cool dudes I met because of that DJTT post, and what better way to break the ice than to invite him to lay down a set for the podcast series. Other prolific Beantown EDM bloggers such as Gaurav Mehta, Angela Bray, and Kat Flyte have done mixes for the watches, so having Gilman out to do one made perfect sense.
Needless to say, MMIBTY.com is a serious venture, one that will make you the proud owner of a bundle of free songs if you read it daily. Jon started the blog with 3 other college friends, the latter of whom now reside in Burlington and Denver. Eventually adding reps from Chicago and New York further cemented their cross-country reputation, and in the span of a year-and-a-half now manage to boast a thousand visitors per day. Not bad for a niche blog (hell I was lucky to have a fifth of that traffic on any given day the second year I was open for business).
Bonus points: mymusicisbetterthanyours.com is well-designed, too
While I tend to view the local dance music scene as pretty tight-knit, one of the reasons I wanted to reach out to Gilman was because we actually had almost zero mutual connections. Jon’s played out a lot, but at venues, I don’t normally frequent: Joshua Tree, Scholars, Liquor Store, Bills Bar, and interestingly enough, the Barstool Blackout Tour. I’m all about getting everyone who likes dance in this city involved here, whether I’ve known them the entire 8 years I’ve lived here or not at all.
Having since heard Gilman’s mixes, he’s very good at managing to play sets that cater to larger audiences who sometimes have more generic taste buds…but without compromising his personal style. This skill is crucial when playing for younger crowds. Jon tends to work his way through many tracks in a short time to keep their short attention spans at bay, and he often keeps them on their toes by changing the tempo. As a very active blogger, he’s on top of what’s hot at the moment, and that’s mirrored in the mix he recorded for BBD. There’s a healthy amount of electro and progressive house here, but there’s also a couple of trap surprises that pop up from time to time.

You can also listen to other mixes by him on Soundcloud and Mixcloud. Or maybe another Barstool show? (You’re never too old to wear neon and get covered in foam, right?)
